IT’S GOODBYE- AFTER 23 YEARS OF SERVICE
After almost 23 years of service at Eunice High School, Mr Danie van der Merwe has decided to bid farewell to Eunice and the Girls in Green, as he embarks on a new job opportunity at Wembley College in Greytown.
The green, green grass of the Natal Midlands will now become his new home, where he will undoubtedly be able to pursue his hobbies and passion for biking, boating, building and flying model aeroplanes.
Although our Eunice family is sad to see him go, we believe he will be extremely happy there — our huge loss is indeed a great gain for Wembley.
There is nothing Mr van der Merwe can’t do. He was the first to arrive in the mornings and the last to leave in the evenings. He knows every building, pipe, cable, and inch of the Eunice campus like the back of his hand, and everyone had him on speed dial.
Mr Van der Merwe began his journey at Eunice in 2003 as Safety Officer and in 2008 he was permanently employed as the Grounds Manager.
There truly is nothing he can’t do. In addition to his usual duties, he would jumpstart cars (when teachers forgot their lights on), fix broken spectacles for girls who accidentally sat on them, or even “break” someone out of their office when they accidentally locked their door. He even took it upon himself to feed the two feral office cats, who wouldn’t go near anyone else but him.
According to Mr Van der Merwe, although the uncertainty of his new journey is a little daunting, he feels that life has come full circle.
“It’s funny how things work out. Our time is not God’s time. When I attended the Mighty Men conference in 2008 in Greytown, we parked our motorbikes and when I looked at the beautiful scenery, I said to myself that this is the place I would one day like to live and retire in.
Now, I have that opportunity — and I couldn’t say no.”
We will miss not only his expertise and help, but also his laughter, his jokes and most of all, him as a person.
We wish Mr van der Merwe the very best on his new adventure in Greytown.
